How Does TEGAFUR/GIMERACIL/OTERACIL Work?

Tegafur is converted into 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in the body. This active medicine interferes with the production of DNA and RNA in rapidly dividing cancer cells, helping stop their growth and causing cell death. Gimeracil slows the breakdown of 5-FU, allowing it to remain active for longer. Oteracil reduces the activity of 5-FU in the gastrointestinal tract, helping limit digestive side effects.
