Gardasil is a vaccine that helps protect against infections caused by certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). It is used to prevent HPV-related diseases, including cervical, vulvar, vaginal, anal, and certain head and neck cancers, as well as genital warts. The vaccine is most effective when given before exposure to HPV, but it may also benefit eligible adolescents and adults as recommended by a healthcare provider.

Gardasil contains virus-like particles (VLPs) that resemble HPV but do not contain live virus or viral DNA. These particles stimulate the immune system to produce protective antibodies. If the vaccinated person is later exposed to HPV, the immune system can recognise and help prevent the infection before it causes disease.
