Velasof comprises of two agents that have anti-viral activities. These agents are Sofosbuvir (400 mg) and Velpatasvir (100 mg). This drug is prescribed for patients suffering from Hepatitis C Virus or HCV infection. This drug combination has demonstrated nearly 95 % efficacy against hepatitis C causing viral agents. Both of these anti-viral agents Sofosburin as well as Velpatasvir act by reducing the viral load from the body.

Velasof(drug combination of Velpatasvir with Sofosbuvir) has specific activity against all HCV genotypes i.e., genotypes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. However, the use of this drug is contraindicated in patients with a known medical record of hepatitis B virus or HBV infection as it can lead to the production of serious side effects. Velasof is administered via oral route in a single dose in the form of tablets and can be consumed either with food or on an empty stomach. Ribavirin may be additionally prescribed to patients who are at the risk of developing serious hepatic diseases. The entire duration of treatment for Velasof is 12 weeks regardless of the genotype afflicting the patient.

Use of Velasof alone may be prescribed in patients with no liver cirrhosis (i,e., with no scarring of the liver) or with the compensated type of liver cirrhosis. However, Velasof must be prescribed along with Ribavarin in patients who are suffering from a decompensated variety of liver cirrhosis. Whether Velasof can be prescribed in patients suffering from chronic renal or kidney diseases is still not clear.

    Precautions related to Velasof:

Following are a few precautions that must be taken before prescribing Velasof to patients suffering from Hepatitis C infection.

    1. Diseases affecting the kidneys: All patients must undergo laboratory investigations or tests pertaining to kidney function or diseases before this particular drug is prescribed. If any sign of renal disease is found, the drug dosage must be either tapered down or should not be prescribed to the patient. A higher degree of precision in drug prescription by a doctor is required in patients who are routinely undergoing kidney dialysis procedures for renal insufficiency or disease.
    2. Pregnant females and sexual activity among men: Velasof has demonstrated teratogenic or mutagenic effects over fetuses. Hence, the use of this drug in pregnant females must be avoided at all costs as it can lead to deformities in a developing fetus or may result in stillbirth.

On the other hand, men on Velasof must use any contraceptive method such as the use of condoms to prevent impregnation during sexual activities.
